GenLab at the centre of grammatical gender research
The second edition of the first multidisciplinary conference on grammatical gender is coming to Frankfurt
We were at the very first International Workshop on Grammatical Gender Acquisition and Processing (GGAP 2026), held September 28–29 at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. Ana Rita Sá Leite gave one of the four plenary talks, presenting our EEG study on gender retrieval in European Portuguese noun production, in which the recorded brainwaves (ERPs) revealed a "gender congruency effect" (evidence of our brain processing grammatical gender) for masculine nouns as early as 80–190 ms after picture presentation and in the N400, along with a larger general P600 for feminine nouns. This suggests that gender is selected even without agreement, very early, and at a higher cost for the marked feminine value.
Rasmus Sinn presented his work on gender transparency in German, moving from an extremely detailed corpus-based quantification of form-to-gender mappings to behavioral and ERP data from a gender categorization task that separates suffixal gender cues from pseudosuffixes that correlate with gender.
Many thanks to the CoALab team for organizing a workshop devoted entirely to grammatical gender.
....Aaaaand we are pleased to announce that GenLab will host the 2nd International Workshop on Grammatical Gender Acquisition and Processing in Frankfurt in 2028. Stay tuned!
