First EEG data acquisition

After several weeks of preparation and calibration, we are excited to say that we’ve successfully run the very first electroencephalography (EEG) pilot experiment in our lab! We collected data from our research assistant, Farrukh, while he completed a simple oddball task with standard (frequent) and deviant (infrequent) visual letter stimuli. In preparing this pilot experiment (using PsychoPy 2026.1.2), we took inspiration from the procedure shared in Luck’s (2014) Introduction to the event-related potential technique.

This basic experiment served the purpose of testing our system and getting an idea about data quality with our current setup (no booth yet). We also used it as a first training opportunity to improve our data acquisition skills with the Brain Products actiCHamp Plus amplifier and the new actiCAP slim/snap system as well as to develop best practices for future EEG projects, including cap preparation, data monitoring, and cleaning.

Luckily, we’ve encountered no problems during the session and everything worked according to our expectations. This is a promising start for our lab and upcoming studies!
